As of 2008, the annual operating budget of the Staatsoper was 100 million euros with slightly more than 50% as a state subsidy.

Top 12 Experiences in Vienna and Austria
Along with stunning Renaissance architecture that builds the perfect mood as you walk past some of the greatest artistic works in the world. Every performance at the Vienna State Opera is reviewed by an independent company in the opera publication Der Neue Merker[9] (The New Judge) which is printed in about 2000 copies. This is unusual in that most opera magazines prefer to concentrate on new productions and premieres.

For current changes of the cast of opera and ballet performances, see here. Mozart is one of the most celebrated artists of Vienna and one of the many who has helped Vienna gain its Music capital title. So it is no surprise that the Vienna Opera House offers many Mozart-related programs. Most of which are inspired by the 22 pieces he composed in his day, along with others that complement his tune.
Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the leading and most important opera houses in the world and a cultural landmark in Vienna. During the National Socialist era, there were numerous performance bans and members of the house were persecuted, expelled and murdered. On March 12, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by bombardment. The backstage area was newly constructed during the postwar period, using the existing foundations. Desperately needed rehearsal space was added to the original design, in addition to a cafeteria and several administrative rooms. Most of the premises, including the dressing rooms, were equipped with speakers and a video monitoring system, which allows the performers and stagehands to constantly observe the stage.
History
Due to the appalling conditions at Theater an der Wien, the opera company leadership tried to raise significant quantities of money to speed up reconstruction of the original opera house. Many private donations were made, as well as donations of building material from the Soviets, who were very interested in the rebuilding of the opera. The mayor of Vienna had receptacles placed in many sites around Vienna for people to donate coins only. In this way, everyone in Vienna could say they had participated in the reconstruction and feel pride in considering themselves part owners. In the meantime, the opera company, which had at first been performing in the Volksoper, had moved rehearsals and performances to Theater an der Wien, where, on 1 May 1945, after the liberation and re-independence of Austria from the Nazis, the first performances were given.

Tickets & visitor tips
For many decades, the opera house has been the venue of the Vienna Opera Ball. It is an internationally renowned event, which takes place annually on the last Thursday in Fasching. Those in attendance often include visitors from around the world, especially prominent names in business and politics. At the beginning of the 2005–2006 season, the ballet companies of the Staatsoper and the Vienna Volksoper were merged under the direction of Gyula Harangozó, which led to a reduction in the number of performers in the resulting ensemble. This has resulted in an increase in the number of guest stars engaged to work in the ballet. The practice of combining the two ballet companies proved an artistic failure, and Harangozó left when his contract expired in 2010.
The building was designed by the Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. At the time, however, the building was heavily criticized by the public and was considered an architectural disaster, leading the sensitive van der Nüll to commit suicide. Just two months later, Sicardsburg died of a heart attack, meaning that both architects did not live to see the completion of the building. The traditional coffee house with Viennese charm is a popular meeting place for music lovers, opera artists and visitors to the opera.

For dates of tours in other languages, please inquire directly at the contact details shown. A peek behind the scenes of the Vienna State Opera, the world’s biggest repertory theater, reveals lots of things that are otherwise hidden from evening opera-goers. A tour provides lots of interesting information about the history, architecture and running of the Opera House. Although constructed in 1869, WWII bomb damage wreaked havoc on the building. So today’s State Opera House is part-original, part-restored and part-modern, all of which you see on the tour through foyers, staircases, intermission rooms, and beyond.
For example, tickets are on sale starting 1 September for the whole of November, and 1 October for the whole of December. You can order tickets in advance for performances which are not yet on sale. On the website of the Vienna State Opera, you'll find the times at which the tours are offered (held at least in German and English).
Creating a magical setting they open their floor to anyone who is looking for a wonderful night. One of the top socialite events that is filled with gorgeous individuals. However, scoring a ticket is not an easy undertaking, and comes with the pressure to dress up like a royal. If you are up to the challenge the opera house promises to offer you an experience you will never forget. The opera house also has an opera school for boys and girls between the ages of eight and fourteen, which takes place in the afternoons after regular school. The children are introduced to music theatre and the prospect of becoming opera singers.
When visiting Vienna, a night at the Vienna Opera is therefore an absolute must. We guarantee you a breathtaking experience with the selected program from Concert Vienna, because it is not without reason that opera has been one of the most outstanding art forms in the world for centuries. The English tour should usually be available at all scheduled times, and everything was very well-organised and swift on my visit; the opera tour is one of many tours of historical buildings available in Vienna. The nearby Vienna State Opera Museum displays a series of exhibitions relating to the building and its history since 1955. See my advice on getting tickets, including the inexpensive option of standing space, where a night at the opera can cost little more than a morning coffee. The opera house greeted its first visitors in 1869 as the Hofoper (court opera) for a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
Even those who are not great fans of classical music should pay a visit to the Vienna State Opera. The neo-Renaissance opera house not only impresses with spectacular performances, but also with its magnificent architecture and sensational interior. These can also be admired on a guided tour that tells more about the architecture, history and opera operations. To the right of the stairs lies the Gustav Mahler Hall, which was, until May of 1997, called the Tapestry Hall. It was named because of the tapestries which adorn its wall, designed by Rudolf Eisenmenger, with motifs from Mozart's »Zauberflöte« (»Magic Flute«).
Vienna’s famous Café Sacher is just over the road – once you’ve finished your tour, be sure to enjoy a slice of their eponymous Sachertorte and soak up some of the glamour of one of Vienna’s oldest coffee houses. You probably pass the Staatsoper on your travels around the city centre; it actually marks the start of my suggested walking tour of Vienna. The interior is such that the new opera house is perhaps the most beautiful theatre in Europe. The public reaction at the time was broadly negative, and this criticism likely contributed to the untimely death of both architects before the official opening. A dark chapter in the history of the house occurred in the years from 1938 to 1945, when the Nazism persecuted, expelled and murdered numerous members of the house, and many works were not allowed to played. In this way, for the following 10 years, there were two venues for the State Opera house while the headquarters were being restored at great expense.
